Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Way out in Angelina County, in the year 1891, a congregation gathered and called itself Warren Chapel Baptist Church. Five years later, in 1896, it took on the name it still carries today: Pollok Baptist Church.
Now, right from the start, these folks were practical. The first meeting place wasn't theirs alone. The Methodists and the Presbyterians were sharing it too.
Three denominations, one roof. You can imagine the scheduling conversations. Then in 1906, the Baptists acquired their own land, and on that land they raised their first church building.
For the baptisms, well, they didn't need a building for that. They had the Angelina River. That's where the early baptisms were performed, under the open sky, in moving water, the way it had been done for centuries.
For decades, services came once or twice a month. That was the rhythm of the place, steady but spare, until 1945, when the congregation called its first full-time pastor. But here's the part of this story that'll make you sit up a little straighter around the fire.
Fire. In 1932, a church building burned. The congregation rebuilt.
In 1955, fire came again. They rebuilt again. Then in 1960, it happened a third time.
Three buildings. Three fires. And three times, those people looked at the ashes, looked at each other, and got back to work.
Some congregations are held together by mortar and timber. This one was held together by something fire couldn't touch.
What the marker says
Founded as Warren Chapel Baptist Church in 1891, this congregation became known as Pollok Baptist Church in 1896. The first meeting place was shared by the Methodist and Presbyterian churches. Land acquired in 1906 by the Baptists was the site of the first church building. Early baptisms were performed in the Angelina River. Services were held once or twice monthly until 1945 when the first full-time pastor was called. Fire destroyed three church buildings in 1932, 1955, and 1960; the congregation rebuilt each time and continued to serve the area. (1996)
