Marion County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the marker tells it, and I'm just passin' it along. Somewhere in Marion County stands a church that has been keepin' time, in more ways than one, since 1872. That's when the building went up, raised for a congregation that had already been organized and was ready to put down roots in something permanent.

And permanent is one word for it. This wasn't just any church building. At one point, it was the largest Cumberland Church building in the entire state of Texas.

The whole state. You let that settle in for a moment. Now, a building that size, a congregation that proud, they weren't going to settle for an ordinary bell.

They had one specially cast. Not pulled from a catalog, not borrowed from somewhere else. Cast for this church.

You can imagine the sound of it rolling out across Marion County on a Sunday morning. But here's the detail that really gets me. Look up at the steeple.

Go on, look. Those clock faces painted up there, they aren't telling you the time of day in any ordinary sense. They're painted to show specific hours.

The hour for Sunday School. The hour for morning worship. The hour for evening worship.

Not hands that move, not a clock that ticks. Just a permanent, painted reminder of when the Lord expects you to show up. The building has been standing since 1872, the bell has been ringing since 1872, and those painted hours on the steeple haven't budged a minute.

Some churches remind you when to come. This one decided to make it eternal.
