Lamar County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Out here in Lamar County, there's a little church with a story that goes back to 1868, and if you slow down long enough, it'll tell you something about what it takes to build a community from the ground up. This is the story of Providence Baptist Church.

John A. Fuller organized it that year with about twelve members. Twelve.

Now, you might think twelve people and a dream isn't much to work with, but those twelve had something going for them, and they were just getting started. In the early days, they didn't even have a building to call their own. They held worship services wherever they could find a roof, the Methodist church building, the local schoolhouse, whatever would have them.

And there's something quietly remarkable about that, a congregation borrowing space to practice their faith, week after week, making do. Then came a man named Joseph Givens. The surrounding community itself was named for him, and Givens donated the land at this very site for church use.

On that donated ground, in 1870, the congregation built their first permanent sanctuary. One large room. That was it.

One large room, and it was everything. Come summer, when revival season rolled around, they didn't stay inside. They went outdoors, under a brush arbor, those simple shelters of cut branches and shade, and they worshipped under the open Texas sky.

And when it came time for baptisms, well, the church didn't need a baptistery. For nearly one hundred years, baptisms were held in local ponds and cotton gin pools. Just think on that.

Generation after generation, walking into those waters, in the same county, under the same sky, carrying on the same faith that twelve people started with John A. Fuller back in 1868. That's not just a church.

That's a community holding onto itself.

What the marker says

This small rural church was organized in 1868 by John A. Fuller with about twelve members. Early worship services were held at the Methodist church building and in the local schoolhouse. Joseph Givens, for whom the surrounding community was named, donated the land at this site for church use, and the first permanent sanctuary, consisting of one large room, was constructed in 1870. Summer revivals were held outdoors under a brush arbor. For nearly one hundred years, baptisms were held in local ponds and cotton gin pools.
