Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna pass it along to you. Now, Jefferson, Texas has no shortage of grand old homes, but every now and then you come across one that just stands there on its lot like it knows something you don't. The R.

B. Walker House is exactly that kind of place. Robert Bruce Walker, born in 1854, was a man who had planted himself deep in the life of Jefferson.

Merchant, former mayor, and later president of the Commercial National Bank. That is a resume that tends to get things built. And in 1910, Walker had this home built for his family.

Not thrown up, not cobbled together. Built. With intention.

The house came out in classical revival style, and whoever drew up those plans was not thinking small. We're talking colossal order Doric columns, the kind that make you tilt your head back just to take them in, and those columns are interwoven with a wraparound porch that invites you to slow down whether you planned to or not. Step up to the front entry and you've got sidelights and a transom framing the door, and up top, brick chimneys rising with elaborate corbelled caps.

Every detail saying the same thing: this family is here to stay. And stay they did. The Walker family held onto that house all the way until 1972.

Robert Bruce Walker himself passed in 1930, but the home he had built kept his name on it for decades beyond that. Some houses outlive their builders by a little. This one outlived him by quite a stretch.

Next time you're rolling through Marion County, take a slow pass by Jefferson and let that wraparound porch remind you what it looked like when a man built something meant to last.
