Navarro County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Back in 1897, twenty-six people decided that was enough. Enough people, enough faith, enough grit to stand up together and say: we are organizing a church.

Twenty-six charter members, right there in Navarro County, and that was the seed of what would become Roane Baptist Church. Now, they didn't have a building yet. That detail comes later.

But they had the Reverend E. T. Jones, their first pastor, and they had the Roane School building willing to open its doors for monthly worship services.

You work with what you've got. That's a very Texas way of doin' things. Then came 1901, and two men by the names of Sam Brooks and Zeb Burke donated land, and on that land the congregation erected their first church building.

A donated piece of ground, a building raised up on it. That moment has a weight to it that you don't need to dress up. For decades the church ran on the dedication of part-time leadership, until 1948, when they employed their first full-time pastor.

Think about the patience in that number. From 1897 to 1948. The congregation kept going.

Kept gathering. Kept growing. And as that membership grew, improvements to the property were made over time to hold them all.

Community outreach programs, traditional activities for members, the kind of quiet steady work that doesn't always make headlines but absolutely holds a community together. The marker tells us the church remains an integral part of that community. Twenty-six people said yes in 1897, and somewhere down that long road, they were proved right.
