Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Samuel M. Slover and his family made their way to Parker County from Arkansas in the mid-1850s.
Now, that's not a short trip, and folks didn't make moves like that without intention. They came, they settled, and before long a community took shape around them. The Slover community, right there in northeast Parker County.
And when a community takes root, one of the first things it needs, besides water and neighbors you can stand, is a place to teach the children. So up went a one-room log cabin, built on Robinson family land. One room.
Think about that for a moment. Everything a schoolhouse needed to be, contained in four log walls. The marker calls it an example of fine early workmanship, and given what that cabin has been through, that's no small compliment.
Because here's the thing about that little building. It didn't just serve as a school. It became a home.
And then, as time has a way of humbling even the finest structures, it became storage for hay. From schoolhouse to home to hayloft. That's a life, right there.
But the story doesn't end in the hay. In 1983, the cabin was returned to its original state. Brought back.
Restored to what it was when Samuel Slover's neighbors were sending their children through its door to learn. The marker puts it plainly: the education of the ancestors, beginning at the Slover School, formed the backbone of this community and the Parker County area. One room.
One family's arrival from Arkansas. One cabin still standing. That's the kind of quiet story that tends to outlast the loud ones.
What the marker says
SLOVER SCHOOL-ROBINSON CABIN Samuel m. Slover and his family came to Parker County from Arkansas in the mid-1850s. The Slover community was established soon after and this one-room log cabin was constructed in northeast Parker County on the Robinson family land. It served the community as a school, home and later as storage for hay before being returned to its original state in 1983. This log cabin is an example of fine early workmanship. The education of our ancestors, beginning at the Slover School, formed the backbone of this community and the Parker County area. This log cabin stands as a reminder of architectural history and the early education system in this community. (2014)
