Bell County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about this place, and friend, it's a good one. Now, picture Bell County, Texas, January of 1903. Two men, Frank Motl and J.F.

Sefcik, gathered the men of Seaton and said, in so many words, let's build something that lasts. What they were building was a lodge. Not just any lodge, but a chapter of the SPJST, the Slovanská Podporujicí Jednota Statu Texas, a Czech benevolent society with a name that could fill a whole county with consonants.

The lodge they founded carried an equally grand title: Hvezda Texasu. The Texas Star. Now that is a name that fits right in around here, don't you think.

The Star of Texas, run by Czech Texans, right there in Bell County. Those early members didn't have a fancy hall to meet in. No sir.

They gathered first in Thomas Mikulastik's blacksmith shop. Think about that a moment. The smell of coal smoke and hot iron, the ring of the anvil maybe still echoing, and these men sitting down to conduct the serious business of a benevolent society.

When the blacksmith shop wasn't available, they moved to the Seaton School. But by 1906, the Star Lodge had built its very first hall right here on this site. Their own place.

From there, they kept adding. More land. More facilities.

A larger hall followed in time. And what went on inside those walls? Drama performances.

Gymnastics. Traditional dance. Choir.

They supported the Red Cross, youth groups, and political rallies. They hosted dances and reunions, meetings and area agricultural fairs. A century of community life, anchored to one spot, started by two men with a vision in a blacksmith shop in January of 1903.

The Star Lodge didn't just light up for one generation. It kept on shinin'.

What the marker says

In January 1903, Frank Motl and J.F. Sefcik led Seaton men in forming an order of the SPJST (Slovanská Podporujicí Jednota Statu Texas), a Czech benevolent society. Members of Hvezda Texasu, the Texas "Star" Lodge, met in Thomas Mikulastik's blacksmith shop and the Seaton School before building their first lodge hall in 1906 at this site. They added more land and facilities over the years, including a larger hall. The Star Lodge has supported programs in drama, gymnastics, traditional dance and choir, as well as the Red Cross, youth groups and political rallies. It has also hosted community activities, including dances, reunions, meetings and area agricultural fairs. (2004)
