Uvalde County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's the official marker's account, as best as old Duane can tell it. Now, out in Uvalde County, the town of Sabinal has itself a Methodist church with a story that stretches back to 1876. That's when this fellowship first took shape, assigned to a circuit, the Sabinal circuit, under the care of the Reverend Henry T.

Hill. Circuit ministers, those tireless souls who rode from congregation to congregation across wide Texas country, served this fellowship for years. Decades, even.

And here's the thing about a circuit church. It doesn't always have a building of its own right away. For a good long while, the Sabinal Methodists made do.

They gathered in the Christian church building. They gathered in the Baptist church building. Good neighbors, apparently, on all sides.

Then came the year 1900, and something shifted. The fellowship stopped being just a stop on a circuit and became its own organized congregation. Standing on its own two feet at last.

Seven years on, in 1907, the present structure was completed. A building they could call their own. But the work didn't stop at Sabinal's city limits.

For a time, pastors at Sabinal Methodist Church rode out to serve new rural congregations too, in Trio and in Knippa. That kind of ministry has a way of spreading roots wide. And as the membership grew, as the programs expanded to meet the needs of the community, additions were made to the church facility.

One chapter at a time, one addition at a time. That's how a congregation endures.

What the marker says

This church began in 1876 as part of the Sabinal circuit assigned to the Rev. Henry T. Hill. Circuit ministers served the fellowship until 1900, when it became an organized congregation. Services were held in the Christian and Baptist church buildings until the present structure was completed in 1907. For a time pastors at Sabinal Methodist Church also served new rural congregations in Trio and Knippa. As the membership grew and church programs expanded to meet the needs of the community, additions were made to the church facility. 1983
