Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Schulenburg Baptist Church. Now, some buildings have a story. This one has a journey.

It starts about 1871, out in Fayette County, when a congregation organized itself as High Hill Missionary Baptist Church. They needed a place to worship, and they weren't about to let a little thing like distance stop them. Lumber — real lumber, not light stuff — was hauled by oxen all the way out to a site three miles north of where you're standin' right now.

Three miles doesn't sound like much until you're the ox. They built their church, they held their services, and life went on. And then, sometime in 1873, word came that a railroad was coming through, and that railroad was going to bring a whole new town into being — the town of Schulenburg.

Now here's where the story gets good. A few months before that railroad arrived, the congregation made a decision that I want you to sit with for a moment. They didn't build a new church.

They moved the one they had. Overland. On rolling logs.

The whole structure, creaking and shifting, rolled across the ground to this very site. Think about the nerve of that. The faith it takes to say — no, we'll bring our church to the future rather than leave it behind.

Once the railroad came through and Schulenburg took shape around it, that building was right here waiting. The congregation kept on, and between 1885 and 1913, something quietly remarkable happened — several faiths shared that sanctuary together, and during those years the place went by the name Union Church. Then in 1927, the congregation reorganized as First Baptist Church, and the story found its name.

One building. Hauled by oxen. Rolled on logs.

Shared by many. Still standing. That's not just a church — that's a testament to something stubborn and enduring, which, if you ask me, is about as Texas as it gets.
