Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. October 21, 1881. Fifteen people.
Several neighboring communities out here in Limestone County. That's all it took to get something started that would last more than a hundred years. They gathered, those fifteen souls, and they organized a Baptist church.
The Rev. G. L.
Jennings stepped up as the first pastor, and right away you get the sense these folks were not waiting around for perfect conditions. They had a schoolhouse, the Shiloh schoolhouse, and that would do just fine for worship. Fourteen years, friends.
Fourteen years they met in that schoolhouse, and here's the part I love, they did it alongside their Methodist neighbors in a Union Sunday School. Now that's a thing. Two congregations, one Sunday School, one rural community figuring out how to make faith work with what it had.
Then came January of 1896, and the members of Shiloh Baptist Church walked into their own sanctuary for the very first time. You have to imagine what that morning felt like after all those years in the schoolhouse. They weren't done building, either.
In 1927, the congregation completed a brand new building to replace the original. One community, rooted deep, growin steady. More than a hundred years of sharing in the religious and cultural heritage of this rural corner of Limestone County.
Fifteen people showed up on an October day in 1881, and they started something that outlasted every doubt anyone might have had about whether it would last. That's the story the marker tells, right here on the road.
