Guadalupe County, Texas

Duane's take

The way I heard it, this story comes straight off the official Texas Historical Commission marker — let me tell it to you proper. Out here in Guadalupe County, there's a place that went through more names than a wanted man crossing county lines. And it all started in 1851, when a man named Jacob De Cordova rode into the picture.

Now De Cordova was a Jamaica native, born in 1808, and he had an eye for land the way some men have an eye for trouble. He looked at this particular stretch of Texas and saw beauty, rich soil, and springs running nearby. So he put down roots, and he called his first home Wanderer's Retreat.

That name alone tells you something about the man — a wanderer who finally found a spot worth stopping. That home didn't stay quiet for long. It served as a stage stop on the San Antonio Road and as a mail delivery station.

People moving through Texas passed right by this spot. And De Cordova, working as a land agent, sold over ninety thousand acres of Texas land — including this very site. He passed on in 1868, but not before setting a whole chain of things in motion.

When this particular property changed hands, it was picked up by nine German bachelors. Nine. And naturally, folks started calling the place Bachelor's Hall — or Nine Men's House, depending on who you asked.

You can imagine the conversations around that fire. But bachelor life has a way of thinning out. Two brothers — Ferdinand Michael and J.

August Dietz, who had ridden as cowboys for De Cordova himself — bought out the other men. And just like that, the community had a new name: Dietz. Then came Johann Phillip Stautzenberger.

Born in 1838, he bought the land in 1861, built a substantial house, put up a general store, and became the first postmaster. The man was planting a real community in the Texas soil. Formal education got its start in a small room right next to Stautzenberger's store.

Frankfort School came along later. And inside that schoolhouse, something happened that you might not expect out on the Texas range — a singing group organized itself. They called themselves the Frohsinn Maennerchor.

Later they took the name Frohsinn Mixed Chorus of Clear Springs, and they were making music in a place that had once been a bachelor hall on the old San Antonio Road. In 1895 a group of farmers founded present-day Friedens Church, right there in that same school building. One building carrying that much history ought to have its own marker.

But here's the thing about communities — the same forces that build them can quietly unmake them. Schools consolidated. The post office closed.

Good roads came through, and then automobiles, and suddenly folks didn't need to stop at Dietz anymore. They could just roll on past. From a Jamaica native's beautiful retreat, to Bachelor's Hall, to a singing society, to a church, to a name on a historical marker — that's the full arc of Dietz.

Some places don't disappear so much as they give everything they had to what came next.

What the marker says

In 1851 Jamaica native Jacob De Cordova (1808-1868) settled here. He selected this spot for its beauty, rich soil and nearby springs. He built his first home, "Wanderer's Retreat". It served as a stage stop on the San Antonio Road and as a mail delivery station. De Cordova, acting as a land agent, sold over 90,000 acres of Texas land including this site. Nine German bachelors purchased the property and it became known as "Bachelor's Hall" and "Nine Men's House". Two brothers, Ferdinand Michael and J. August Dietz, cowboys for De Cordova, bought out the other men and the community became "Dietz". Johann Phillip Stautzenberger (1838-1904) bought the land in 1861, built a substantial house and general store, and became the first postmaster. Formal education began in a small room adjacent to Stautzenberger's store with Frankfort School starting later. "The Frohsinn Maennerchor", a singing group, was organized in the schoolhouse. Later they adopted the present name of "Frohsinn Mixed Chorus of Clear Springs". In 1895 a group of farmers founded present-day Friedens Church in the school building. Consolidation of the schools, closing of the post office, and good roads and automobiles caused this early community to disappear. (1978)
