Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about this place: you be the judge of how the story lands. Now, some schools leave a mark on a town. Some schools leave a building.
And some schools manage both, even after they're gone. The Peacock Military Academy, that name alone ought to conjure something. Proud.
Upright. A little formal. Which, when you hear who founded it, makes a certain kind of sense.
Wesley Peacock was a well-known educator and child psychologist, and back in 1894, he planted his original academy down in San Antonio. That school stood for decades, building a reputation sturdy enough that by 1930, Peacock decided north Texas needed a branch of its own. He opened it right here, this very site, offering military, academic, and physical education for young men anywhere from first grade all the way up through junior college.
That's quite a range. Six-year-olds and near-grown men, all under the same disciplined roof. Now here's where the story takes a turn, and you probably already felt it coming.
Four years. That's all the Dallas branch got. By 1934, the school had gone bankrupt and closed its doors.
The Great Depression had a way of doing that to even the proudest of institutions. But here's the part worth remembering as you pass this spot: that central administration building didn't fall. It didn't sit empty and rot.
Come 1938, it was back in use as an educational facility, and it kept right on serving that purpose. Wesley Peacock may not have known it at the time, but he built something that outlasted the name on the door.
What the marker says
The original Peacock Military Academy was founded in 1894 in San Antonio by Wesley Peacock, a well-known educator and child psychologist. In 1930 Peacock opened a north Texas branch of the school at this site to provide military, academic, and physical education for young men in the first grade through junior college. Although the Dallas branch of the Peacock Military Academy went bankrupt and closed in 1934, its central administration building has been used as an educational facility since 1938.
