Duane's take

Here's what the marker has to say, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Wood County, there's a story that started not inside four walls, not under a proper roof, but under a pine tree. The first Sunday in June, 1869, the Reverend Jacob Ziegler stood out in the open air, elders gathered beside him, and together they organized the Smyrna Baptist Church.

Eighteen constituting members. That was the whole congregation, the whole foundation, right there beneath the branches. Now, I want you to sit with that image for a second.

Eighteen people and a pine tree, and they said, yes, this is where we begin. Years rolled by, and in November of 1878 a Sabbath school was organized, giving the community something else to gather around, something to carry the next generation forward. And eventually, Smyrna got a building.

Not just any building, mind you. A two-story structure that wasn't content doing just one job. That original building housed the church, yes, but also a lodge and a school, all under the same roof.

One building carrying the weight of a whole community's spiritual life, its fellowship, and its education all at once. Started under a pine tree in the summer of 1869, and it grew into something that tried to hold everything a community needs. That's Smyrna Baptist Church.
