Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about this place. Now, some stories come at you with a flood of names and dates and drama enough to fill a novel. And then there are stories that speak in a different register altogether, quiet and deep as old roots.
South Belton Cemetery is one of those. Established in 1851, this ground has been holding its peace, and its people, for a long, long time. Before Bell County filled up with towns and roads and all the noise of living, somebody chose this spot.
Somebody said, here. This is the place. And it has been the place ever since.
The State of Texas recognized it as a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2003, which is the official way of saying what folks around here probably already knew: that some ground earns a kind of respect that just accumulates, year by year, quietly, the way cemeteries do. Established 1851. That is the whole of the tale, and somehow, standing next to a fact that old, that is more than enough.
