Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm going to tell it to you. Way back before there was a Lake Waco sitting pretty on the map, before any of that water came rolling in, there was a man named Israel Washington Speegle. Early settler.

Community namesake. And right there in his home, a congregation was born. That's where it all started, gathered around somebody's hearth, the way so many things worth keepin' started in Texas.

The year was 1850, and they called themselves Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. A good name. A hopeful name.

The kind of name that sounds like it was chosen on a clear morning. For decades that congregation held on, led by part-time pastors and dedicated lay members who gave what they had and kept the thing alive. Then came 1883, and Pleasant Grove joined with Greenwood Baptist Church, and when those two congregations came together, they took a new name.

Speegleville Baptist Church, carrying Israel Washington Speegle's name right on into the future. Now, if you want to know what church life looked like out there in Speegleville, the marker gives you the picture in full color. Sunday School.

A summer revival, and not just any revival, but one with baptisms right there in Speegleville Creek, the real open-air kind, the kind you remember. Music, worship, community outreach. The whole living, breathing life of a congregation that meant something to the people in it.

But here is where the story takes a turn that requires a moment of quiet. Lake Waco was built. And the congregation, not once but over the years, had to pick up and relocate to make way for that rising water.

Think about what that means. The place where Israel Washington Speegle first opened his home, the creek where they baptized their neighbors under the summer sky, all of it gradually swallowed by a lake. And still, Speegleville Baptist Church endured.

That's the whole thing right there. The water came in, and the church moved, and it's still going. Some things, it turns out, don't need a fixed address to hold their ground.

What the marker says

Founded in the home of early settler and community namesake Israel Washington Speegle, this historic congregation formally organized in 1850 as Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. It was renamed Speegleville Baptist Church after the members joined with Greenwood Baptist Church in 1883. Part-time pastors and dedicated lay members have led the congregation throughout its history. Sunday School, a summer revival with baptisms in Speegleville Creek, music, worship and community outreach are counted among the ministries and programs of the Speegleville church. The congregation has relocated over the years to accommodate the building and enlargement of Lake Waco. (2001)
