Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, in my own words. On May 2, 1904, eighteen charter members gathered in Runnels County and did what Texans of every stripe have always done best: they built something that would last. They organized SPJST Lodge No. 49, and they weren't latecomers to the cause.
The SPJST itself had only been around for eight years at that point, and here was Lodge No. 49 already carrying the torch. The goals were clear from the start: promote fellowship, keep Czech culture alive on the Texas plains, and make sure members had life insurance and care when they needed it. That's a serious promise to make to your neighbors, and this lodge intended to keep it.
Then came 1927, and the lodge set its sights on something bigger. Working alongside members of the local Sokol organization, they started planning a new building. When those doors opened, the place became more than just a meeting room for the two groups.
Other organizations came through. Sporting activities filled the grounds. Community gatherings, celebrations, the kind of events that stitch people together in a place.
All of it happened here. Now, it's easy to look at a date like 1904 and think you're reading history. But Lodge No. 49 is still out there, still promoting fraternalism, still building up the Rowena community.
Eighteen people started this thing. What they planted, a hundred-plus years later, is still growing.
What the marker says
On May 2, 1904, eighteen charter members organized SPJST Lodge No. 49 in Runnels County. Founded just eight years after the SPJST's organization, Lodge No. 49 continued the Czech-Texan benevolent society's goals of promoting fellowship and Czech culture, and providing life insurance and care for its members. In 1927, the lodge began working with local Sokol organization members on a new building. Once opened, it functioned as a meeting place for the groups, in addition to other organizations. Sporting activities and community and celebratory events have also been held on the grounds. Today, SPJST Lodge No. 49 continues to promote fraternalism while building up the Rowena community. (2009)
