Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Out here in Oldham County, in the heart of the Texas Panhandle, there stands a courthouse with a story that stretches across twelve counties and more trouble than most places see in a lifetime. We're talkin' about the Tascosa Courthouse, built in 1884.
Now, let that sink in for just a moment — 1884. The Panhandle was still a place where the wind carried more dust than law, and somebody decided right here was the place to anchor some order. Twelve counties.
Twelve. This one building served as the legal backbone for the entire Panhandle region, and if you think that was a quiet administrative arrangement, well, the next part of this story ought to correct that impression. Because this courthouse was the site of trials for killings — and not just a killing here or there.
Enough killings to fill Boothill Cemetery. Let that settle over you like a cold front rolling in off the plains. Boothill.
Filled. And the trials for those killings happened right inside these walls. Tascosa held on as the Oldham County seat all the way until 1915, giving this place more than three decades at the center of Panhandle life, lawful and otherwise.
After the courthouse days wound down, these grounds became the headquarters of the Julian Bivins Ranch, serving that purpose for many years. The land kept on working, kept on meaning something. And then, in 1939, something happened here that had nothing to do with cattle or courtrooms or Boot Hill.
This place became the birthplace of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch. Out of a site that had once hosted the worst of what men do to each other, something was built for young people who needed a fresh start. That's not a footnote.
That's the whole thing. That's the marker right there, if you ask me.
