Erath County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. There's a house sitting in Erath County that has seen more chapters than most folks write in a lifetime, and every one of those chapters has a name on it. This is the story of the Gallagher House.

It starts in 1895, when a man named W. T. Leggett built himself a Victorian residence.

Now Leggett wasn't just any resident of Dublin. He was the manager of the Dublin Music Company, which is the kind of detail that makes you wonder what music sounded like floating out of a brand new house on a Texas evening in 1895. The house stood as Leggett built it for a good while, but houses, like stories, have a way of growing.

Come 1907, the property had passed into the hands of a man named J. H. Wilder, and Wilder had ideas.

He added a two-story Classical Revival porch to the east side of the house. Two stories of porch. The kind of addition that tells the whole neighborhood you mean to stay a while and enjoy the view.

Then 1914 arrives, and with it the man whose name the house would carry forward. Michael D. Gallagher, born in 1854, a native of Ireland, came to own this property.

He had put down roots in Dublin the way a man does when he's decided a place is his, running a local mercantile store and making himself part of the fabric of the town. He died in 1921, but the house did not let go of the family. Members of the Gallagher family lived there for thirty-five years.

Thirty-five years of one family inside walls that had already known a music man and a porch-builder. Some houses just know how to hold a story together.

What the marker says

This Victorian residence was built in 1895 for W. T. Leggett, manager of the Dublin Music Company. The two-story Classical Revival porch was added to the east side of the house in 1907 during the ownership of J. H. Wilder. In 1914 the property was purchased by Michael D. Gallagher (1854-1921), a native of Ireland who owned a local mercantile store. Members of the Gallagher family lived in the house for 35 years. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1980
