Duane's take

Here's how the marker on Henry Hurley tells it, and I'll do my best to honor every word. A minister of the Primitive Baptist Church, the Reverend Henry Hurley was born on December the twenty-fourth, 1796. Now that's a Christmas Eve birthday, and somehow it feels right for a man who would spend his life showing up for people in hard places.

He came to Texas in 1844, and from that moment forward, his years in this state were given over to one calling: organizing frontier churches and helping pioneers settle in new communities. Think about what that meant out here. New ground, raw land, folks trying to put down roots where there weren't any yet.

Hurley was part of what made that possible. He worked his way through Hunt County, Fannin County, and Collin County, establishing churches as he went, building something lasting in places that didn't have much of anything lasting yet. Then, about 1859, he came to Erath County.

And that same year, he organized the Bosque Church of the Primitive Baptists. He became its pastor. And he didn't leave.

He served that congregation right up until his death on September the fourteenth, 1869. Born on Christmas Eve, buried in Erath County, and in between, a life spent planting churches on the Texas frontier. Some men build in stone.

Henry Hurley built in faith, and apparently that held.
