Duane's take
The way the official marker tells it, here's the story of Trimble Cemetery in Medina County. Edwin Trimble was born in 1808, and by all accounts he'd built himself a prosperous life in Kentucky. Now, a prosperous life in Kentucky is nothing to sneeze at — but in 1854, Edwin packed up his family and pointed them toward Texas.
He settled in this area following the Civil War, and it looked like the gamble might just pay off. Then a snakebite took him in 1869, and the ground where he fell became the ground where he was laid. That's how a family's homestead becomes a cemetery.
One death, and the place is forever changed. Edwin Trimble, 1808 to 1869. The first name in the ground.
But not the last. His wife Dorothy G. Trimble, also born in 1808, followed him in 1875 — and the marker doesn't soften how she died.
Dorothy was killed by a robber. That line just sits there, and it ought to. Edwin's mother, Mary S.
Trimble, born way back in 1786, lived on until 1878 and was laid to rest among them too. Then came Edwin's son, Robert Trimble, born 1850, gone by 1877. The losses kept arriving.
Little Lillie McDaniel, daughter of T.M. McDaniel, born 1865 and buried here in 1879. Grace Lytle, daughter of W.T.
Lytle, born 1880 and gone in 1881 — barely a year in this world. Edwin's own grandson, J.G. Trimble Jr., born 1862, died 1884.
And then the men the wider country might have known: cattleman Thomas M. McDaniel, 1838 to 1887, and William T. Lytle — early San Antonio resident and businessman — born 1850, died 1891.
What started as one man's final resting place became a whole community's sorrow, written in stone on a piece of Medina County ground. Edwin Trimble left Kentucky for a new life. What he left behind, in the end, is this.
