Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Trinity Episcopal Church of Longview. Now settle in, because this is a story about a little congregation that just refused to stay little. When Longview was established in 1871, the few Episcopalians who moved into that new city needed somewhere to point their souls on a Sunday morning.

The Diocese took one look at the sparse population out there and designated the whole area a mission field. A mission field. That's the kind of label that says, politely, don't get your hopes up too high.

Well. The Longview congregation had other ideas. They grew, and they kept growin, and by 1932 they had done something that mission fields aren't supposed to do quite so decisively.

They achieved full parish status. Two years after that, they went ahead and purchased land on Padon Street, right alongside the new Nuggett Hill neighborhood, planting roots where roots are meant to stay. Then came the nineteen-fifties, and if you thought this congregation was going to slow down, you would be wrong.

They took on management of Good Shepherd Hospital, and if that wasn't enough, they turned around and established Trinity School of Texas. A hospital and a school. Not bad for a place that started out as a mission field with a sparse population.

In 1985, a new sanctuary and education classrooms were built, giving the congregation a home built for everything they had become. Trinity Episcopal Church of Longview continues its legacy of service to the community to this day, which, when you think about where it all started back in 1871, is about as satisfying an ending as a Texas story gets.

What the marker says

WHEN LONGVIEW WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1871, THE FEW EPISCOPALIANS WHO MOVED TO THE CITY NEEDED SPIRITUAL DIRECTION, AND THE DIOCESE DESIGNATED THE AREA AS A MISSION FIELD DUE TO SPARSE POPULATION. HOWEVER, THE LONGVIEW CONGREGATION QUICKLY GREW. IN 1932, THE CHURCH ACHIEVED PARISH STATUS. TWO YEARS LATER, THEY PURCHASED LAND ON PADON STREET ADJACENT TO THE NEW NUGGETT HILL NEIGHBORHOOD. IN THE 1950s, THE CHURCH ASSUMED MANAGEMENT OF GOOD SHEPHERD HOSPITAL AND ESTABLISHED TRINITY SCHOOL OF TEXAS. A NEW SANCTUARY AND EDUCATION CLASSROOMS WERE BUILT IN 1985. TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF LONGVIEW CONTINUES ITS LEGACY OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY. (2022)
