Lavaca County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the United Evangelical Lutheran Dr. Martin Luther Church in Lavaca County. Now settle in, because this story starts an ocean away and ends right here on Texas soil — and it touches just about every corner of the county along the way.

A man named Rev. Wilhelm Dziewas made the crossing from Dopken, East Prussia, arriving in Texas in 1892 as missionary pastor of Zion Lutheran Church of Charlottenburg, about seven miles northeast of Shiner. Now that's a long way to travel to tend a flock, but Dziewas wasn't the kind of man to stop at one congregation.

In 1896, he helped establish the Dr. Martin Luther Church right there in Shiner, first setting up at the corner of Avenue F and 4th Streets. The congregation came to be known around those parts as Dziewas Kirche — Dziewas' church — or the free Lutheran church, a name that signified its lack of synod affiliation.

No oversight from above, so to speak, unless you count the Almighty himself. And Dziewas kept going. He organized Lutheran congregations in Breslau, Witting, Gonzales, and Cost.

That is a man who covered ground. For the German Texans who had already put down roots, and for the new arrivals still carrying the old country on their shoulders, these churches were more than places of worship. Services were conducted in German for many years — a direct link back to the homeland — and the church served as the center of education and social life too.

But here is where the story turns heavy. The influenza epidemic of 1919 took Dziewas and other members of the congregation. After that loss, the Dr.

Martin Luther Church merged with Shiner's St. Paul Lutheran congregation, and together they became the United Dr. Martin Luther Church.

The St. Paul sanctuary wasn't torn down or forgotten — it was moved, and dedicated as Luther Hall, put to use for Sunday school classrooms, meetings, and church socials. Then in 1948, the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Shiner and Zion Lutheran Church of Charlottenburg — the very church where Dziewas had first arrived all those years before — joined the congregation.

Four years after that, in 1952, the growing church took the name it carries today: United Evangelical Lutheran Dr. Martin Luther Church. And two years later, the congregation moved to a new sanctuary right here at this site.

From East Prussia to Lavaca County, from one missionary pastor riding circuit through the Texas countryside to a unified congregation with local and global ministries — this church has held onto its heritage and kept building on it. That's the kind of story a marker can point to, but only the community living it can truly tell.

What the marker says

Members of this historic church helped spread Lutheranism through Lavaca and surrounding counties. For acculturated German Texans and for new arrivals, the Lutheran Church also served as the focal point of educational and social activities. The church was also a direct link back to the homeland; church services were conducted in German for many years. Rev. Wilhelm Dziewas, a native of Dopken, East Prussia, immigrated to Texas in 1892 as missionary pastor of Zion Lutheran Church of Charlottenburg (7 mi. NE). Dziewas helped to establish the Dr. Martin Luther Church in Shiner in 1896, first located at Avenue F and 4th Streets. The church was also known as Dziewas Kirche (Dziewas’ church) or the free lutheran church, signifying its lack of a synod affiliation. Pastor Dziewas also organized Lutheran congregations in the nearby towns of Breslau, Witting, Gonzales and Cost. After Dziewas and other members died in the influenza epidemic of 1919, the Dr. Martin Luther Church merged with Shiner’s St. Paul Lutheran congregation, establishing the United Dr. Martin Luther Church. The St. Paul sanctuary was moved and dedicated as Luther Hall, used for Sunday school classrooms, meetings and church socials. In 1948, the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Shiner and Zion Lutheran Church of Charlottenburg joined the congregation. In 1952, the growing church changed its name to United Evangelical Lutheran Dr. Martin Luther Church, moving two years later to a new sanctuary at this site. The church has preserved its heritage while enriching the community and the world through local and global ministries.
