Van Zandt County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Van Zandt County Courthouse. Now settle in, because this building has a story worth hearin'. It is the sixth courthouse to serve Van Zandt County.

The sixth. Which means five others came before it, and somewhere along the way, somebody decided enough was enough and it was time to do things right. That somebody, as local lore has it, was the commissioners court.

And the year was 1937. Right in the teeth of the Depression. The commissioners decreed, and that is the word, decreed, that a modern courthouse should be erected.

Not just for the sake of having a fine building, mind you. The marker is plain about this: the goal was to provide jobs for the men of the county. Public Works Administration funds made it possible, and the people of Van Zandt County went to work.

Now, when the dust settled and the scaffolding came down, what they had built was something to behold. The style is art deco and art moderne, and the building is what architects call a stepped massed edifice, with cast stone veneer walls and a vertical emphasis that makes the whole thing reach for the sky like it means it. The firm behind the design was Voelcker and Dixon, based out of Wichita Falls and Houston, and they knew this territory well.

That firm designed several west Texas courthouses in this very style. So when you look up at those clean lines and those sharp angles, you are lookin' at a particular vision, a particular moment in American architecture, applied to a particular county in a particular time of need. Six courthouses deep, and this one was built by men who needed the work, funded by a federal program, and shaped by designers who left their mark across the region.

That is not just a building. That is a story in stone.

What the marker says

Built in 1937 with public Works Administration funds, this is the sixth building to serve as the Van Zandt County Courthouse. According to local lore, the commissioners court decreed that a modern courthouse should be erected in order to provide jobs for men of the county during the Depression era. The stepped massed edifice with cast stone veneer walls features art deco and art moderne details and is noteworthy for its vertical emphasis and its association with the architectural firm of Voelcker and Dixon.
