The way the official marker tells it, here's the story of Veal's Station. Now, Parker County has seen its share of founding figures: men who showed up, rolled up their sleeves, and just plain refused to let a place stay ordinary. William G.

Veal was that kind of man. The settlement here goes back to 1852, when folks were first putting down roots in this stretch of Texas. But Veal (born in 1831, and he'd live all the way to 1891) he wasn't content just to settle.

Six years after the community took hold, in 1858, he established right here what the marker calls an outstanding school of Parker County. And outstanding is not a word the old records throw around lightly. That school didn't flicker out after a season or two, didn't fold when times got hard, which they always do.

It functioned for more than a half-century. You let that sink in; more than fifty years of children filing in, learning their letters, learning their numbers, in a county still finding its footing on the Texas frontier. The marker calls Veal a leading spirit in all public improvements of the region.

Not one improvement. Not a couple. All of them.

That's the kind of reputation you don't buy and you can't borrow; you earn it, slowly, year by year, school year by school year. William G. Veal showed up in 1858 and built something that outlasted almost everyone who watched him build it.

That's not a footnote. That's a legacy.

What the marker says
