Tales of Tragedy

Hear Duane tell it

Brazoria County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Velasco Methodist Church, out in Brazoria County. Now settle in, because this congregation's story is not for the faint of heart — it is, in a word, a story of weather. Bad weather.

Repeatedly. And a people who simply refused to quit. Way back in the 1830s, Methodist circuit riding ministers were already making their rounds through the Velasco area, holding worship services out on the edge of what was then a very young Texas.

These were men who rode into the wind, and as it turns out, that was good practice for what the community they served would face. Now, the original townsite of Velasco — gone. Wiped out in the hurricane of 1875.

After that, a new town developed further inland, as towns that have been humbled by the Gulf tend to do. And it was in that rebuilt community, led by the Reverend John L. Sullivan, that the Velasco Methodist Church was formally organized in 1893.

They moved fast. By 1894, they had a brick sanctuary standing — brick, mind you, like they were trying to send a message to the sky. That sanctuary served the congregation faithfully.

Right up until the hurricane of 1900 came through and destroyed it. If that had been my congregation, I might have had a theological question or two. But not these folks.

A new sanctuary was completed in 1904. They built again. They worshipped.

They carried on. And then — you already know where this is going — hurricane damage in 1932. They rebuilt again.

Three storms. Three times down. Every single time, back up.

The Velasco Methodist Church has continued, through all of it, to serve the people of Brazoria County. Some congregations have a founding story. This one has a survival story — and honestly, that might be the better kind.

What the marker says

Methodist circuit riding ministers were conducting worship services in the Velasco area as early as the 1830s. After the original townsite was destroyed in the hurricane of 1875, a new one developed further inland. Led by the Rev. John L. Sullivan, Velasco Methodist church was formally organized in 1893. A brick sanctuary, erected in 1894, served the congregation until it was destroyed in the 1900 hurricane. A new sanctuary was completed in 1904. Rebuilding again after hurricane damage in 1932, the church has continued to serve the people of Brazoria County. (1988)
