Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll pass it right along to you. Way out here in Collin County, there's a little frame church that has been pulling folks together for a long, long time, and the story goes back further than the building itself. Back in 1846, a man named Reverend J.N.

Vance organized a fellowship right here. They called it Union Congregation in those early days, which tells you something about what they were reaching for: a gathering of neighbors in a land that was still finding its shape. Now, a name like Union Congregation has a certain ring to it, but by 1858 the congregation had settled on something a little more rooted in the ground beneath their feet.

They renamed it Walnut Grove. Twelve years of history had passed since Reverend Vance first called the people together, and this community was starting to feel permanent. The first church building on this very property came along in 1869, erected on land donated by a man named D.M.

Crutchfield. That's a gift worth remembering; a piece of earth handed over so a community could have a place to stand. And on those grounds, they held camp meetings.

Now, if you've never been to a camp meeting, just picture a whole community coming in off the farms and the dusty roads, gathering under open sky, the kind of fellowship that makes a week feel like a lifetime. That tradition lived right here on this land. The building you can see today was built in 1886, a frame country church, the kind that seems almost too modest for the weight of everything it's held.

It was remodeled in 1968, brought a little further along into the modern world, but still standing, still in use. From 1846 to right now, through name changes and new buildings and camp meetings fading into memory, Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church has kept the doors open. Some things in Texas just endure.

What the marker says

Organized in 1846 by the Rev. J.N. Vance, this fellowship was first called Union Congregation. In 1858 the name was changed to Walnut Grove. The first church building on this property, donated by D.M. Crutchfield, was erected in 1869. Camp meetings were often held on the church grounds.
