Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Wedemeyer Hospital Site in Williamson County. Now, some buildings just hold space. Four walls, a roof, a address.

But some buildings hold something more. Something like history. And this one on the marker, it does both.

Dr. G. A.

Wedemeyer, born August 26, 1875, a native of Burton down in Washington County, made his way to Taylor in 1905. He was, by all accounts, an early prominent physician in these parts. And by 1915, he had himself a hospital.

His hospital. The kind of place where you don't just hang a shingle, you build a whole operation. That hospital ran continuously, year after year, decade after decade, all the way through 1957.

Think on that for a moment. While the world turned itself inside out more than once, while whole eras came and went, that hospital kept its doors open. Dr.

Wedemeyer himself passed on January 24, 1936, but the work he built outlasted him by more than twenty years, still standing, still serving. And then, when its days as a hospital were finally done, it didn't get torn down. It didn't get forgotten.

It became a retirement home. The exterior, right down to its original style, still stands the way it stood in Wedemeyer's time. The inside got modernized, sure, but that outside, that face it shows the world, that stayed.

Some buildings just hold space. This one held a whole community's health, and then, when it was time, offered a place to rest.
