Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to honor every word. Wesley Chapel A. M.
E. Church, San Marcos, Hays County. Now, some stories begin with a building.
This one begins with a people. The history of Wesley Chapel traces back to 1875, and the congregation is believed to be the oldest African American congregation in San Marcos. Think about what that means for a moment.
Eighteen seventy-five. The ink on Reconstruction was barely dry, and these folks were already gathered, already building something that would outlast nearly everything around them. The first church building went up on this very site in 1879.
And when that structure ran its course, another came. Then another. A succession of structures, each one carrying the weight of the one before it, each one raised by the same community that started this thing in 1875.
But here is the part that stops me every time I hear it. In the 1870s, this church operated a Freedmen's school, right here, for former slaves and their children. A congregation finding its footing, and already turning around to reach a hand back.
That is not a small thing. That is the kind of thing a community does when it knows exactly who it is and what it stands for. And Wesley Chapel kept standing for it.
Through the years, the church has continued to support numerous community and charitable endeavors, a thread of service running unbroken from those earliest days all the way to now. It remains, the marker says, an important part of the history of San Marcos and Hays County. I'd say that's putting it modestly.
