Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll pass it along just as it stands. Now, some churches spring up fully formed, stained glass and all, like they were always meant to be there. Wesley United Methodist Church in Waco was not that kind of church.

No, this one started the way a lot of great things start, quietly, in a storefront. The year was 1902, and a man named Reverend B.J. Goff founded what was then called the East Side Mission.

Just a congregation finding its footing, meeting wherever there was room. For a while that meant a storefront. Then it meant the Old County School Building.

You work with what you've got. But here's the thing about a congregation that keeps showin' up, year after year, in borrowed spaces. It's building something, even when the walls aren't its own.

By 1911, that something had a name and an address. Jones Chapel, on Paul Quinn Street. A real place.

A place to belong to. The congregation settled in, and the years rolled by, one decade folding into the next. Then came 1961.

After more than a half century on Paul Quinn Street, the congregation made a move, half a mile south, to the present location. And they didn't just move, they built. A rectangular plan brick building, sturdy and deliberate, with an open-concept basement and a balcony up in the sanctuary.

More than a hundred years of serving Waco, and Wesley United Methodist Church is still standing right there where they put it.

What the marker says

Originally founded in 1902 as the East Side Mission by Reverend B.J. Goff, the Wesley United Methodist Church has served Waco for more than 100 years. In the beginning, the congregation met in a storefront and in the Old County School Building before the establishment in 1911 of Jones Chapel on Paul Quinn Street. In 1961, the congregation moved half a mile south to the present location and built this rectangular plan brick building featuring an open-concept basement and a balcony in the sanctuary.
