Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna pass it along to you. Way back in 1872, a man named Reverend A. D.

Manion gathered thirteen charter members together and organized a congregation. They called it Pleasant View Baptist Church. Now that name has a certain promise to it, doesn't it.

A view. Something worth looking toward. The congregation worshipped and grew, and in 1883 they put up a church building.

That building stood and served those folks for years. But 1901 had other plans. The congregation made a decision that takes some doing, some real community will.

They dismantled that building. Took it apart, piece by piece, and rebuilt it at a place called White Rock, on land they purchased from a man named P. W.

Titus. And with the new location came a new name. White Rock Baptist Church.

Not a fresh start exactly, more like the same roots finding new ground. Then 1925 rolls around and the congregation builds again, a new sanctuary this time, raised up across the creek from the 1901 site. Think about that for a moment.

First you move the whole church. Then a generation later you build anew just across the water from where you landed. Hunt County was watching all of this, and it remembered.

The marker says White Rock Baptist Church has been a part of Hunt County history for over one hundred years. That's not just longevity. That's a congregation that twice remade itself and kept right on going.

What the marker says

The Rev. A. D. Manion, along with thirteen charter members, organized a congregation known as Pleasant View Baptist Church in 1872. A church building was erected in 1883 and served the congregation until 1901, when it was dismantled and rebuilt at White Rock on land purchased from P. W. Titus. After its relocation the name of the church was changed to White Rock Baptist Church. In 1925 a new sanctuary was built across the creek from the 1901 site. White Rock Baptist Church has been a part of Hunt County history for over one hundred years.
