Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say, and I'll be straight with you, it's a short tale but it carries its own kind of weight. Whiteflat Cemetery, Motley County, Texas. Established 1913.
Now, a cemetery doesn't announce itself with fanfare. It doesn't need to. Out here on the high plains, where the wind has its own opinion about everything and the sky goes on longer than a tall man's shadow, a piece of ground set aside for the departed speaks quietly.
But it speaks. Somebody, back in 1913, looked at this patch of earth and made a decision. They said: this is where we remember.
This is where we bring our people. And from that year forward, Whiteflat had a place that told the world a community had put down roots, had loved its own, and intended to honor them. That's the thing about a cemetery established that far back.
It's not just a burial ground. It's a ledger. Every stone is a name the land agreed to keep.
Whiteflat Cemetery. Still here. Still keeping those names.
Some stories don't need a long ride to get somewhere true.
