Wilson County, Texas

Duane's take

Now, I'm gonna tell this one the way the official marker tells it, so you know you're gettin' the straight story. Wilson County. Created February 13, 1860, organized just a few months later on August 6th of that same year.

That's a county that got itself up and running in a hurry. But the name, the name is where the story really starts. This county is named in honor of James Charles Wilson, born in 1816, gone by 1861.

A short window on this earth, and yet the man packed enough into it that a whole county carries his name to this day. He rode with the Mier Expedition. If you know your Texas history, you know that name carries weight.

If you don't, well, just know it was not a comfortable undertaking. Before all that, Wilson had served as district clerk of Brazoria County in 1844, doing the careful, thankless work of keeping records and holding the machinery of justice together. And then he rose.

Senator from Matagorda County. A man who went from expedition to clerk's desk to the senate floor. Floresville sits as the county seat, steady and rooted, the way a good county seat ought to be.

James Charles Wilson, 1816 to 1861. The county remembers.
