Duane's take

This one comes straight from the official marker, and it's a life worth every word. John Silas Edens — born December 15, 1820, in Arkansas — showed up in present-day Houston County, Texas, in 1831. He was ten years old, give or take, and Texas wasn't even Texas yet.

Just raw country. And somehow, that suited him just fine. He'd spend the rest of his days proving it.

When the Republic of Texas called for soldiers in 1836, Edens answered. Then, as if one fight wasn't enough, he joined the Texas Rangers and rode out into several Indian campaigns in 1841. The man had a talent for showing up wherever things were hardest.

But here's the part that surprises you — after all that, he went home. Back to Houston County. Back to the land.

He and his first wife, Amanda Adams, put down roots and raised a family of seven children. Farmed. Ranched.

Built something quieter than a battlefield. Then the Civil War came calling, and Edens answered again — Confederate army this time. When it was over, he came back to Houston County once more, and he did something that tells you exactly what kind of man he was: he established the area's first school.

The fighter became the founder. In 1868, the Edens family picked up again and moved to McLennan County, settling in the Leroy Community. That's where John Silas Edens finally stayed put.

He died at his Leroy home on July 3, 1892. Arkansas-born, Texas-made, and buried in the community he helped build — that's the whole of it, and it's plenty.
