Duane's take

Now, I'm giving you my telling of what the official marker says about the Abbott United Methodist Church, so hold on and let's get into it. It starts, as so many good Texas stories do, with a single man riding a circuit. The year is 1883, and a Reverend G.

W. Swofford holds the first Methodist worship service in Abbott. Just one service.

But you know how these things go. One service has a way of turning into something considerably larger. A congregation is organized, and Abbott becomes a regular stop on the Hillsboro circuit, with the Reverend J.

P. Mussett stepping in as the first pastor. Now here is where the story gets genuinely impressive.

By 1886, that congregation has more than six hundred members. Six hundred. In Abbott.

You let that number sit with you a moment. The first Methodist sanctuary goes up in 1884, and it does its job faithfully, serving that growing community until a new church building is completed in 1899. Fifteen years of Sundays under that first roof.

Then came the new building, and it has been standing ever since. Now, the marker is honest with you, the way a good marker ought to be. The population of Abbott and the membership in the church have both declined since the 1940s.

But the Abbott United Methodist Church, as the marker puts it, retains important historic ties to the town's early heritage. And that right there is the whole arc, one preacher, one service, one circuit stop, and a community that built something worth remembering.

What the marker says

The first Methodist worship service in Abbott was held in 1883 by the Rev. G. W. Swofford. A congregation soon was organized and became a regular stop on the Hillsboro circuit, with the Rev. J. P. Mussett as first pastor. By 1886 the congregation had more than 600 members. The first Methodist sanctuary, built in 1884, served until the current church building was completed in 1899. Although both the population of Abbott and membership in the church have declined since the 1940s, Abbott United Methodist Church retains important historic ties to the town's early heritage. (1984)
