Hill County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. The public school system in Abbott, Hill County, got its start in 1885, when somebody had the good sense to put up a one-story frame schoolhouse on the east side of town. Now, one story, wood frame, nothing fancy.

But it held a hundred and forty pupils and three teachers, which tells you something about the ambition of the place right from the beginning. A hundred and forty kids under one roof, three teachers holding the line. You do the math on the noise level, and you'll understand why the next chapter involved brick.

In 1911, right here at this very site, they raised a two-story brick structure to take the load. And that building carried the Abbott school system for fifty-five years. Fifty-five years of first days and last days, of chalk dust and report cards and kids who couldn't wait to get out and graduates who'd give anything to go back.

Then came the milestones. Around 1934, the schools earned full accreditation, a seal of approval that meant Abbott's education could stand alongside anybody's. Five years on, in 1939, a vocational agriculture program took root, which in a Texas farming community is about as natural a thing as rain in spring.

Over the years, consolidation with surrounding area districts kept bringing more students in, growing the enrollment, growing the story. The marker puts it plainly: the Abbott schools have played an important role in the town's development. Sometimes the plainest sentences carry the most weight.

What the marker says

The public school system in Abbott began in 1885 when a one-story frame schoolhouse was constructed on the east side of town. It housed 140 pupils and three teachers. A two-story brick structure, built at this site in 1911, served the Abbott school system for 55 years. The schools were given full accreditation about 1934, and a vocational agriculture program was begun in 1939. Consolidation with surrounding area districts has increased enrollment over the years. The Abbott schools have played an important role in the town's development. (1985)
