Duane's take
The way the marker tells it, here's the story of a little town that came and went in San Patricio County. Angelita. Some folks called it the Littlest Angel, and that name, well, it fits the story just about perfectly.
Angelita was one of several rural communities that grew up in San Patricio County after the Civil War. Nobody set out to build a legend. They just built a schoolhouse, sometime in the 1880s, and that schoolhouse became the beating heart of the place.
Community life, such as it was out on those South Texas plains, centered right there. You can picture it, neighbors gathering, children learning, the whole quiet machinery of a small town finding its rhythm. Then, in 1904, the St.
Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railroad came rolling through. That arrival changed things. A town was platted.
Businesses were established. Angelita had itself a railroad station, which meant farmers and ranchers from the surrounding land suddenly had a proper shipping point for their agricultural products and cattle. The Littlest Angel was humming.
But here is where the story turns, and it turns quiet, the way the saddest things do. In 1916, the post office and the school both relocated to Odem. Two things.
That is all it took. The post office and the school. And when those two pillars of a community pulled up and moved on, Angelita began to decline, and then, eventually, to vanish.
No fire, no flood, no dramatic ending. Just a slow fading, like the last light of an evening nobody thought to mark. The Littlest Angel, gone.
The marker stands in 1988 to make sure at least the name is remembered.

Angelita was one of several rural communities which grew up in San Patricio County after the Civil War. A schoolhouse was erected in the 1880s and was the center of community life. After the arrival of the St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railroad in 1904, a town was platted and businesses were established. The railroad station at Angelita provided a shipping point for agricultural products and cattle from nearby farms and ranches. The relocation of the post office and school to Odem in 1916 caused the town of Angelita to decline and eventually vanish. (1988)
