Oil Boom

Hear Duane tell it

Stephens County, Texas

Duane's take

The way the marker tells it, here's what you need to know about this place. Breckenridge Stephens Walker was a banker and an oilman, and when the oil boom came to the town of Breckenridge, he rode that wave about as high as a man could ride it. Born in 1876, gone by 1929, he packed a lot of living in between.

And one of the things he did with his success, one of the things that still stands today, was build a gift. Not a small gift, mind you. A three-story brick residence, Tudor Revival style, perched right at the top of a hill.

He had it constructed in 1922, and he gave it to his daughter Pansy as a wedding present. Now, think about that for a moment. A wedding present.

Three stories of brick, prominent on a hilltop, looking out over a town flush with oil money. Walker wasn't a man who did things halfway. The home came with the town's first central heating system, which in 1922 was the kind of detail that made neighbors stop and stare.

And if that wasn't enough, there was a bank vault in the basement. A bank vault. In a house.

Built for a wedding. That tells you just about everything you need to know about Breckenridge Stephens Walker and the era that made him. The boom days brought fortunes up fast in that town, and this house, still standing on its hill, is what one of those fortunes looked like when a father wanted to say congratulations to his daughter.

What the marker says

Banker and oilman Breckenridge Stephens Walker (1876-1929) had this three-story brick residence constructed in 1922 as a wedding present for his daughter, Pansy. Prominently sited at the top of a hill, the home featured the town's first central heating system and a bank vault in the basement. The Tudor Revival style structure stands as a symbol of Walker's financial success during Breckenridge's oil boom days.
