Oil Boom

Stephens County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Old First National Bank Building in Stephens County. Now, some buildings just stand there. But some buildings have a way of watching the whole arc of a place's story, start to finish, from the quiet years all the way through the wild ones.

This one's that kind of building. The First National Bank of Breckenridge was organized in 1904, back when Stephens County was primarily a farming and ranching area. Picture it: a county built on fence lines and cattle, on soil and seasons, the kind of place where a handshake carried real weight.

That bank took root in that world. Then the ground changed, literally. The oil boom came, and Breckenridge found itself right in the middle of it.

At the height of all that frenzy, in 1920, the bank moved its headquarters into a brand new building, and they did not build something modest. They built a Beaux Arts Classical Revival structure, with Ionic columns and bracketed architecture over the doorway. In the middle of a boomtown going half-wild with oil money and ambition, somebody decided the place where you kept your money ought to look like a temple.

And you know what, they weren't wrong. That building served as the First National Bank building for decades, all the way through the booms and whatever came after, right up until 1972. Farming and ranching, then oil, then history.

That building watched it all.

What the marker says

The First National Bank of Breckenridge was organized in 1904, when Stephens County was primarily a farming and ranching area. The financial institution moved its headquarters to this building following its completion in 1920, during the height of the area oil boom. The Beaux Arts Classical Revival structure, which features Ionic columns and bracketed architecture over the doorway, served as the First National Bank building until 1972.
