Duane's take

Here's the story as the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Picture a German family stepping off into Texas in 1873, carrying everything they owned and a whole lot of hope. That man was Johannes Brill, born in 1832, and he didn't come alone.

He brought his wife, Anna Schafer, and their daughter, Emilie, and they pointed themselves toward a community of familiar faces, a German settlement called Big Cypress, later known as Klein. When you're that far from home, finding people who speak your language, who came from the same kind of country you did, that matters more than you can say. Johannes was a farming man, and he put his hands to that Texas soil the way he knew how.

But he was also a builder in a bigger sense. He helped organize what is now the Trinity Lutheran Church of Spring, which tells you something about the kind of man he was. Roots first, then walls.

And speaking of walls, around 1880 he built a house for his family. Not right here where this marker stands, mind you. Originally, that house sat eight miles from this very site.

Eight miles. That house had a life of its own, and it traveled. It passed from Johannes and Anna down to Friedrick and Emilie Mueller.

Emilie, of course, was that same daughter who crossed into Texas as a little girl back in 1873. The Brill-Mueller family held onto that home all the way until 1981. Generation after generation, the same family, the same walls.

The marker puts it simply and well: the history of this family home reflects the area's rich German heritage. And sometimes the plainest words carry the most weight.

What the marker says

In 1873, German native Johannes Brill (1832-1909) immigrated to Texas with his wife, Anna Schafer, and their daughter, Emilie. They settled near friends in the German community of Big Cypress, later known as Klein. Brill farmed his land and helped organize what is now the Trinity Lutheran Church of Spring. He built this home, originally located eight miles from this site, for his family about 1880. The house later belonged to Friedrick and Emilie (Brill) Mueller and remained in the Brill-Mueller family until 1981. The history of this family home reflects the area's rich German heritage.
