Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Now, some stories come to you long and loud, full of names and battles and dates you can hang your hat on. And then some come to you quiet.
Almost a whisper. This is one of those. Out in Angelina County, there's a place called Brown Cemetery.
It was established, the marker says, circa 1879. Circa. That word's doing a lot of work.
It means somebody knows roughly when, but the land itself isn't giving up the exact day. Around 1879, then, this ground was set aside. People were laid to rest here.
That's the whole of it, and somehow that's enough. The years kept coming, as they do, and in 2012 Brown Cemetery was recognized as a Historic Texas Cemetery. Not forgotten.
Accounted for. There's something to be said for a place that outlasts the knowing of it, that stands in Angelina County still, marked and named and tended enough to earn that designation. Brown Cemetery.
Established circa 1879. Some stories don't need a lot of words. They just need to be told.
