Duane's take
The way the marker tells it, here's the story of Brown County, Texas. Created August 27, 1856, and organized March 21, 1857, this county carries the name of a man worth remembering. Captain Henry S.
Brown. Now that name didn't just fall out of the sky onto a map. Brown came to Texas in 1824, back when coming to Texas meant something altogether different than it does today.
He worked as an Indian trader and fighter, moved through a land that was still being contested inch by inch, and when things came to a head at the Battle of Velasco, he was there commanding a company. He was also a member of the Convention of 1832, a man who showed up when history called the roll. The county seat was established as Brownwood in 1856, and then in 1867 it moved to a new site, though folks kept the name all the same.
Brownwood then, Brownwood now. Some names just stick. Captain Henry S.
Brown stepped off into Texas in 1824, and more than a century and a half later, you're still driving through the proof of it.
