Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Now, there's a patch of Jack County out in north Texas that carries a title most towns would envy: Petroleum Capital. But before it ever earned that name, somebody had to show up first, and that somebody was Henry E.
Bryson. Born on September 1, 1839, Henry was a Civil War veteran, a farmer, a stockraiser, the kind of man who looked at raw land and saw possibility instead of hardship. In 1878, he built the first log cabin right here on this spot.
One man, one cabin, one beginning. Then, in 1882, the Bryson post office was established, and the town started finding its footing, growing into a center for cotton and grain. Real work.
Honest work. For a good while, that was the whole story. Then 1902 arrived, and with it the Rock Island Railroad, and suddenly Bryson wasn't just a quiet agricultural town anymore.
It had a connection to the wider world, and the wider world had plans for it. Those plans came into focus in 1925, when the first oil well was drilled here. Now, once you drill one well and it comes in, you don't stop.
The town moved fast. Through the nineteen twenties and thirties, a gasoline plant hummed away right here. And from 1935 until late 1954, an oil refinery was in full operation.
Jack County's Petroleum Capital wasn't just a title someone handed out. It was earned, barrel by barrel, year by year. Through all of it, the churches, the schools, the social and civic clubs, the Masonic bodies, they kept the community together, kept it growing.
Henry Bryson showed up in 1878 with a log cabin and a whole lot of nerve. He passed on October 25, 1909, probably before the oil ever came in. Sometimes you plant a seed and somebody else gets to see the bloom.
That's Bryson, Texas.
