Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna do it justice. Now, some towns take a while to find their footing. Cuero, Texas was barely a town at all, just getting its start in 1872, when a man named Otto Buchel showed up.

Same year the city was founded. You couldn't have cut it much closer than that. Buchel got himself into the mercantile business, partnering up with a fellow named George Seeligson, and by all appearances he was just another merchant trying to make a go of it in a brand new town.

But Otto Buchel had something nobody else in Cuero had. A safe. Now, you think about what that means in a raw, young town with no bank in sight.

People had valuables. People had no place to put them. And here's Otto, with the only safe around.

Within a year, folks were bringing him their valuables to keep. One thing led to another, as it tends to do, and by 1873 Buchel had himself a private bank, right there on that site. What started as a safe in a mercantile had grown into something this region was going to lean on for a long time.

And lean on it they did. Panics came. Hurricanes came.

Droughts came, spelled out on that marker as drouths, the old way, and that suits the story just fine. Through all of it, Buchel's Bank held. It gave commerce in that area something it needed badly: impetus and stability.

Those are the marker's own words, and they earn their place. Then in 1907, the bank was incorporated as Buchel National Bank. Otto Buchel himself, born in 1849, died in 1909, just two years after seeing that incorporation through.

The bank outlasted him, and it kept going. Today it still serves this South Texas region as Buchel Bank and Trust Company. A man showed up the same year as the town, with nothing but a safe and a head for business, and what he built is still standing.

That's not a coincidence. That's Cuero.

What the marker says

Otto Buchel (1849-1909) came to Cuero in 1872, the year of city's founding; operated a mercantile business in partnership with George Seeligson. Buchel had the only safe in town, and within a year began keeping citizens' valuables. With addition of other services, he established a private bank on this site in 1873. Buchel's Bank survived panics, hurricanes, and drouths, giving impetus and stability to early growth of commerce in area. Bank was incorporated in 1907 as Buchel National Bank and still serves this South Texas region as Buchel Bank and Trust Company.
