The way the marker tells it, here's what went down in Cherokee County, Texas — and I'm giving it to you straight from the official record. Now, Cherokee County had itself a lot of things by the time the nineteen-twenties rolled around. Timber, farmland, good red clay.
But oil? That was still just a rumor underneath the ground. Then 1927 came along, and the Humble Oil and Refining Company decided to go looking.
They drilled a discovery well out at the northeast corner of Carey Lake — right there where the water meets the creek bottom and the land starts getting soft and strange. And what they found down in the dark was something geologists had to sit with for a minute. The oil wasn't just sitting in some ordinary layer of rock.
It was tied up in a unique geological relationship between recoverable oil deposits and subterranean salt domes. Salt domes. Ancient pillars of salt pushing up from deep in the earth, trapping oil against the stone like a secret pressed behind a locked door.
That right there was Cherokee County's first commercial oil field — born in the area of Carey Lake and Boggy Creek, and it wasn't going to stay quiet. Humble Oil didn't just punch a hole and call it a day, either. They got to work in a way that turned heads across the whole industry.
Out here in this East Texas creek bottom, they introduced innovative recovery techniques — seamless tubing, oil-gas ratios, well pressures — methods that were new enough at the time that the rest of the industry eventually looked over, nodded, and said, well, we'll be doing that from here on out. Those techniques subsequently became industry standards. That's not a small thing.
What started at the edge of Boggy Creek ended up shaping how oil fields operated far beyond Cherokee County. Production kept on through the years, all the way into the nineteen-fifties. Decades of work, drawn up from those salt dome secrets beneath Carey Lake.
Some discoveries change a county. Some change an industry. This one, tucked into a corner of East Texas where a lake meets a boggy creek, managed to do both.

Cherokee County's first commercial oil field was discovered here in the area of Carey Lake and Boggy Creek by the Humble Oil and Refining Company in 1927.
