Dallas County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Way back in the early 1860s, when Dallas County was still rough country, the kind of place where a family had to make its own landmarks or go without, William and Mattie Worthington Caruth set down roots deep enough to last. Pioneer settlers, both of them.

And one of the things they gave to that land was a cemetery. A place set apart for the keeping of the dead, established by their own hands, on their own ground. The Caruth Pioneer Cemetery.

Now right across the road from where those graves lay, there stood the old Caruth Chapel. And that chapel was the kind of place that saw a whole life through: beginning, middle, and end. Circuit-riding preachers would come through, and when they did, they officiated at baptisms, at marriages, at funerals.

The full sweep of a human life, all of it happening for the tenants of Caruth Plantation and for the other local people who needed a place to mark what mattered. The gravesites themselves were donated by the Caruth family. Not sold.

Donated. There's something in that worth sitting with for a moment; a family that said, this ground is for the people who lived and died among us, and we're giving it freely. The chapel is gone now from the telling, but the cemetery remains, and the marker stands in 1967 as witness to a family that understood, maybe better than most, that a community isn't just the living.

It's everyone who ever was.
