Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna do it justice. Way out in Castell, Llano County, the story of a schoolhouse starts the way the best Texas stories do, with people who decided something mattered and got to work. Now, according to local oral tradition, education for students in Castell may have begun as early as 1852.
May have. That's the kind of detail that lives in the telling, passed down from neighbor to neighbor, generation to generation, before anybody thought to write it down. The earliest written records pick up later, in 1884, when the Llano County commissioners court made it official and designated the Castell School as District No. 6.
Six years after that, land was deeded for the school's use. The community didn't wait around after that. Members of the community built a two-room schoolhouse.
Two rooms. You think about what those two rooms meant to the families out there in that stretch of Llano County, and it's not a small thing. Then 1929 came along and they expanded it to three classrooms.
The school housed ten grades, which means if a student in Castell wanted to finish out their high school education, they had to make their way to Llano, or Fredericksburg, or Mason. That's just how it worked. But the school kept on.
It kept on until declining enrollment finally closed it in 1948, and it was consolidated with the Llano School District. Now, here's the part that lands for me. The building didn't go dark.
It didn't sit empty and forgotten out there on that Llano County land. It remained in use as a community center. A place that had gathered children in to learn kept right on gathering people.
Some buildings just refuse to stop being useful.
What the marker says
Education for students in Castell may have begun as early as 1852, according to local oral tradition. Earliest written records indicate that the Llano County commissioners court designated the Castell School as District No. 6 in 1884, and land was deeded for the school's use six years later. Members of the community built a two-room schoolhouse, which was expanded to three classrooms in 1929. Castell School housed ten grades, so students wishing to complete their high school education did so in Llano, Fredericksburg or Mason. Due to declining enrollment, the school closed in 1948 and was consolidated with the Llano School District, but the school building remained in use as a community center. (2001)
