Duane's take

The official marker's got the story, and here's my telling of it. Now, you might think the cattle brand is a purely Texas invention, something dreamed up on the open range somewhere between the Brazos and the Rio Grande. But the marker sets the record straight right from the start: proof of ownership by brand goes back to 600 B.C.

Long before Texas was even a dream, somebody was pressing a mark into hide and saying, this one's mine. That tradition rolled into Texas in 1821, and it hasn't let go since. Brands get registered in counties, burned right onto the hides of cattle, and every owner carries an individual brand; no two alike, that's the whole point.

When you're talkin' about Texas, several thousand of these brands is the count, and that number just keeps growin'. But here's what makes this particular collection something worth pullin' over for: the brands gathered here belong to the leaders who shaped this state (patriots, soldiers, bankers, rangers, industrialists). The whole sweep of Texas history, told not in words carved on a wall, but in iron marks, fire, and cattle hide.

When you look at those brands, you're not just seein' who owned what. You're seein' who built what. And that's a story that goes a lot deeper than the skin.

What the marker says

Proof of ownership since 600 B.C.; in Texas since 1821. Registered in counties and burned on hides of cattle. Every owner has individual brand. In Texas these aggregate several thousand. History of Texas is displayed here in brands of leaders: patriots, soldiers, bankers, rangers, industrialists. (1966)

Hear thousands of these as you drive.
