Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Centennial of Methodism in Commerce, Hunt County, Texas. Pull up a chair, because this story starts long before there was even a town to tell it in. Two Methodist congregations were already out here serving the earliest settlers of the Commerce area.
Lebanon, sitting about a mile and a half to the east. Mt. Zion, about five miles to the southeast.
No town squares, no incorporated streets. Just faith and hard ground and people showing up. As the community began to grow, local Methodists started worshiping together in a schoolhouse on Pecan Street.
That's where they gathered, week after week, making do. Then in 1881, four years before Commerce was even incorporated as a town, something worth marking happened. The Lebanon fellowship joined them, and together they formed a Union Church.
Think about that. Commerce didn't officially exist yet, but the church was already pulling people together. By 1890 they had built a proper, separate sanctuary on Church Street.
A real structure. A place of their own. And then time kept moving, as it does, and a later building went up on Park Street, completed in 1907, and that one served the congregation for decades.
When the present facility was finally built in 1968, the church had already been the backbone of this community through more chapters than most institutions ever see. The marker puts it plainly: for over a hundred years, this church has actively led in community development. Started in a schoolhouse before the town had a name on a map.
That's not a footnote. That's the whole story.
What the marker says
Two Methodist congregations, Lebanon (1.5 mi. E) and Mt. Zion (5 mi. SE), served the earliest settlers of the Commerce area. As the community grew, local Methodists began worshiping in a schoolhouse on Pecan Street. In 1881, four years before Commerce was incorporated, they were joined in a Union Church by the Lebanon fellowship. A separate sanctuary was built on Church Street in 1890. A later structure on Park Street, completed in 1907, served until the present facility was built in 1968. For over 100 years the church has actively led in community development.
