Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Chambers County. Now settle in, because this one's got layers. We're talkin' about a piece of Texas that was carved right out of two others, Jefferson and Liberty counties, stitched together into something new.
The date was February 12, 1858, when Chambers County was created. Then came the organizing, the real business of becoming a county, and that happened August 2, 1858. From creation to organization in a matter of months.
Texas didn't waste much time back then. The county seat landed in Wallisville, also in 1858, and there it stayed. Now the name, that's where the story really gets interesting.
Chambers County was named in honor of General Thomas Jefferson Chambers, born in 1802, died in 1865. And here is a man with a title that sounds almost too grand to be real. He was the first and only superior judge of Texas before the revolution.
The first. And the only. There was nobody before him and nobody after him in that particular role, because Texas went and had itself a revolution and the whole arrangement changed.
That's the kind of footnote that could swallow a man whole, but Chambers kept going. He was a member of the Secession Convention of 1861, still in the thick of Texas history well into his later years. And then there's Anahuac, the town that sits in this county today, first known by another name entirely: Chambersea.
It carried that name until 1908, when Anahuac became what it's been called ever since. One county, two origin counties, one singular judge, and a town that answered to a different name for longer than most people remember. That's Chambers County, and now you know what the marker knows.
