Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Christian Crenwelge came to this part of Texas in 1854, a native of Germany making his way in a new land. He put his hands to two trades, farming the soil and crafting cabinets, the kind of man who could coax a living out of the earth and beauty out of wood.

Now, the property you're looking at right now, across the street from where Crenwelge himself called home, that land came to him by way of a sheriff's land sale in 1872. He bought it at auction, fair and square, and for a stretch he ran a molasses press right here on the grounds. Then, around 1903, he put up that Victorian style Sunday house, the one standing across from his homestead.

It's the kind of structure that makes you stop and look twice, a touch of elegance planted right there in the Texas Hill Country. But here's where the story turns quiet. In 1906, Christian Crenwelge lost his wife.

And not long after, he sold this residence and his homestead both. Two properties, decades of work, a life built timber by timber and acre by acre, passed on after that loss. Sometimes the weight of a place is inseparable from the person you shared it with.

Christian Crenwelge knew that better than most.
